Obtaining Codecs

Most of the various codecs sould play natively in Foobar 2000. If not there are plug-ins on the homepages linked to below for both Foobar and Winamp (2x and 5x)

Ogg Vorbis - The recommended version of the Ogg Vorbis Codec is aoTuV beta 4.51 which you can download from here.

LAME MP3 - There are two main versions of LAME:

TooLame MP2 Codec - You can download this from the Rarewares mp3 page. Read more about it on the project's homepage. What is MP2?

Gogo MP3 - This mp3 codec is based on and old version of LAME (originally 3.88 and now 3.92) and is optimised for speed. The home page for the encoder is here but the latest binaries can be downloaded from Rareware's Audio's MP3 page (Gogo-no-Coda 3.13 bundle). Again this has an internal and external version but the internal version is not supported by Audiograbber.

The 3.12 bundle is also available on Rarewares but that the version above may crash on PC's below PIII. Here is a link to an optimised version for PII Computers

Musepack (MPC) - Musepack is the best option for high quality lossless files although it has no hardware support. However if you use your computer as a jukebox this codec could be one to choose. The latest version is 1.15v and can be downloased from Musepack net.

Free Advanced Audio Encoder (FAAC) - The home page of the FAAC project is here. However you will need to head to Rarewares AAC page to download the latest binaries (FAAC Binaries for Win32). It is recommended to use vbr with FAAC rather than a CBR unless you want a specific file size or for streaming on the internet. The latest version of FAAC is 1.24.1 version which has new command line options and can be found here.

Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) - The FLAC Projects home page can be found here. You can download FLAC from Rareware's Lossless Audio Page

Monkeys Audio - Considered by many to be the best Lossless codec there is. Download the file (latest version 3.99) from the homepage and once installed use the file mac.exe with Audiograbber.

Wavpack (wv) - An Lossless codec but can also create hybrid files. The codec creates a small lossy file and a correction file so you can restore it to a full lossless file in the future.

The Wavpack home page can be found here where you can download all the codec & plug-ins.

Optim Frog (OFR/OFS) - An excellent lossless codec which comes in three "versions". These are the standard lossless codec (ofr), the Dual Stream version (ofs) which according to the home page is "aimed at filling the big gap between perceptual coding and lossless coding" by producing a lossy and correction file (similar to Wavpack hybrid) and the IEEE Float version (which is audio stored as 32bit floating point values, as defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

The Optim Frog home page can be found here where you can download all the codec & plug-ins.

TTA Lossless Audio Codec - A new arrival which claims to be the best lossless compressor there is. Very fast. Download the files from it's homepage.

Shorten - A lossless codec that is popular on the trading live music newsgroups. More information on shorten can be found here.

Lossless Audio (LA) - Lossless Audio is another lossless codec and it's homepage can be found here as can all the binaries for downloading. Once installed use the file la.exe with Audiograbber.
