Formed in Wolverhampton, U.K., in 1985 the Mighty Lemon Drops' distinctive, sharp-edged brand of pop 'n' roll quickly captured the attention of local audiences, subsequently spreading the length and breadth of the country when the group began an extensive tuoring stint that found them playing to capacity crowds. Their debut, independently released single "Like An Angel" further served to sweeten the Drops' musical renown. The group went on to find themselves to be an alternative favourite after contributing the original song "Happy Head" to the New Musical Express' 1986 compilaton collection. A fierce bidding war by no less than nine record comapnies found the group eventually signing to Sire Records in the U.S. and the fiesty Blue Guitar Label in the United Kingdom. Stephen Street (of Smiths fame) produced The Mighty lemon Drops' debut album, "Happy Head" which provided vinyl proof of the group's over-the-top live response and featured many of their performave favourites, including the singles "Other Side Of Uou" and "My Biggest Thrill". The Drops subsequently toured the U.S. for the first time, serving to whet stateside audiences' appetite for their tasty material musical confections and spawning the U.S. only mini-lp "Out Of hand", a smash on American college radio charts. "World Without End" was the band's second fully-fledged studio effort and contained two distinctive singles, "Fall Down (Like The Rain)" and "Inside Out". Graduating from the controlled mayhem of "Happy-Head" with the help of Tim Palmer (Robert Plant, The Mission, and, most recently, Tin Machine), the album is a multi-textured, musically refined sonic adventure that landed in the U.K. Top 40 and shot to the top of college charts in the U.S. The remainder of 1988 and early 1989 was spent touring much of the globe and palying over one hundred and twenty dates, including sold out shows in the U.K., Europe, Brazil and the U.S., where they toured for a solid thre months. Once agin the Drops dominated the college charts and comfortably filled one venue after another with a growing coterie of devoted fans. The past few months have found the Mighty Lemon Drops back in the studio - this time in Peter Gabriel's state-of-the-art facility in Bath, working on their long-awaited third lp, with new bassist Marcus Williams and producer Mark Wallis of Go-Betweens fame. The result is "Laughter", a passionately played album certain to elicit cries of delight from fans of pure pop. The Mighty Lemon Drops. It's the musical flavor of the Nineties. Top Of Page or Back |
