World Without End is the smashing new album from one of England's brightest new musical exports. The Mighty Lemon Drops have fashioned a sound that recalls some of the freshest, smartest and most entertaining of pop traditions. At the same time, with three sparkling albums to their credit, they've given their fans on both sides of the Atlantic a taste of pop's future. Buoyant melodies, exquisite harmonies and a flair for clean, concise arrangements -- it all comes together on World Without End's dazzling selection of ten original songs. Featuring their irresistible new single "Inside Out," World Without End spotlights such quintessential drops of Mighty lemon as "Hear Me Call," "Fall Down (Like The Rain)," "Hollow Inside," and the memorable "In Everything You Do." Originally called the Sherbert Monsters (there's an appealing link to sweet confections here), the quartet first formed in the spring of '85 in and around the environs of their native Dudley, in the heart of the English Midlands. The group subsequently relocated to London, where they wowed the usually disdainful urbanites with a mix of punk energy and vintage Sixties resonance. In December of '85 the quartet, now officially The Mighty Lemon Drops, released their first single, "Like An Angel," which shot to the top of the indie charts and served notice of a fresh new musical force on the horizon. They went to tour the country twice and sat in on one session with Brit rockers Andy Kershaw and Janice Long. It was only a matter of time before the M.L.D.'s landed a major recording contract, the matter, in this case, being late summer when Sire Records signed the group for American distribution. A second single, meanwhile, had hit the streets in London. "The Other Side Of You" met with wildly enthusiastic response and, thus fortified the lemons entered the studio to begin work on their debut album. Happy Head hit the racks in late 1986 and was followed by an extensive American tour with The Chameleons. Returning to the U.K. in early 1987, the band began work immediately on a follow-up LP. The resulting five-song EP, Out Of Hand, highlighted the scintillating M.L.D. live sound on three in-concert cuts recorded at London's Astoria Theater. The group returned to the studio in late '87 with producer Tim Palmer, whose work with The Mission and Robert Plant mark him as one of the hottest young producers on the scene. With a sheaf of new material, much of it road tested during the band's U.S. and UK swings, the band began work on what is their best, most original and sheerly satisfying collection of their career to date. World Without End is the Mighty Lemon Drops at their best. And it doesn't get much better. Top Of Page or Back |
