Introduction

The Shop Assistants were formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1983 (originally as Buba & The Shop Assistants) releasing a single "Something To Do" in 1984. After this release Vocalist Aggi left and went on to play in a number of other bands including The Sugarcubes and The Pastels. Stephen Pastel also played on "Something To Do" and the links between The Shop Assistants and The Pastels remained. Indeed Pastel and David Keegan were founder members of the 53rd & 3rd record label which saw releases by Talulah Gosh and the BMX Bandits as well as the Shop Assistants.

Aggi was replaced by Alex Taylor and the band released their Shopping Parade EP (Subway) in 1985 to great acclaim scoring success in the independent charts. They also released one of the finest singles ever produced, Safety Net, which I have always looked on as a Teenage Kicks for my generation! The definitive line-up was Alex Taylor (vocals), David Keegan (guitar), Sarah Kneale (bass), Laura McPhail (drums) and Ann Donald (drums).

After contributing a track (It's Up To You) to the NME "C86" compilation the band signed to Blue Guitar (at the same time as the Mighty Lemon Drops) releasing one single and album for that label before lead singer Alex left the band to form the Motorcycle Boy in 1987 with members of Meat Whiplash.

The band re-emerged in 1989, minus Alex, releasing a brace of singles (with Sarah Neale taking over on vocals, Laura McPhail moving onto bass and previous band member Margarita back on drums - Ann Donald joined The Fizzbombs) signing off with the excellent Big E Power. The band finally split after David Keegan joined The Pastels full time in 1990.
